    René Bousquet

René Bousquet was general secretary of the Vichy Police in 1942, when thousands of French Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. Bousquet was accused of having organized the deportations and in 1949, was tried and acquitted, going on to enjoy a successful career in banking. But the past eventually caught up with this former civil servant when 30 years later, accusations against him began to grow more credible, and he was forced to resign the many posts he’d held on the boards of public companies. In 1989, the Association of the Children of French Jewish Deportees along with two other organizations filed charges of crimes against humanity against Bousquet and the old man spent the next 15 years responding to the accusations and defending his name. But Bousquet’s trial never came to court as in June 1993, he was shot dead by a madman.
